S. Gurdial Singh is a famous Punjabi novelist, born in Malwa, in Punjab. He gained fame with his novel Marhi Da Deeva published in 1964. Apart from novels and short stories, he is known to have penned three plays, two prose works and nine books for children. He has also published eight collections of short stories which include Saggi Phul (1962), Kutta Te Aadmi (1971), Begana Pindh (1985) and Kareer Di Dhingri (1991). Two of his popular novels Marhi Da Deeva and Addh Chanini Raat have been translated into English, known as The Last Flicker (Sahitya Akademi) and Night of the Half-moon, respectively. The National Book Trust also translated one of his Punjabi novels Parsa in English. Gurdial Singh taught as a professor in college for long time.
